Sites of City Walls in Tang Dynasty

As a historical and cultural city, Yangzhou enjoys a long history. The sits of city walls in Tang Dynasty just witnessed that history. They seemed to tell us thousand years of history of Yangzhou and the past stories about Yangzhou .

The first city set up in Yangzhou can be traced back to the end of Spring and Autumn Period in 2400 BC. Although city walls were flourishing and destroyed from Qin, Han, Wei, Jin, Song, Qi, Liang, Chen Dynasty until Sui and Tang Dynasty, the townsite never changed. The Supplement of MengXiBiTan, the encyclopedia written by Shenkuo in Song Dynasty, wrote that it was in Tang Dynasty when Yangzhou reached the most flourishing and wealthy position. The old city was 15 li and 110 paces long in the south-north direction and seven li and 30 paces long in the east-west direction. In the Five Dynasties, a small city was constructed in the southeast of Yacheng. In Song Dynasty, another big city was set up. In the later years of South Song Dynasty, the Baoyou City was built to resist troops of the Yuan Dynasty. After the Song Dynasty collapsed, Baoyou City was destroyed into a flatland and only left broken city walls of Song Dynasty. In Ming and Qing Dynasty, an old city and a new city were built in southwest and southeast of Songda City respectively.

At the beginning of the liberation, all the city walls were removed. On the top of Shugang, seeing from north and south direction, one can clearly find discontinuous historic sites of old city walls. In 1978, Nanjing Museum and Yangzhou Museum jointly investigate and exploit Tangya city, discovered sites of city walls and gate, and initially made clear the scale of sites of city walls in Tang Dynasty, which made great contribution to research of Yangzhou in Tang Dynasty. The sites also attracted great interests of archaeologists at home and abroad.

The site of city walls in Sui-Song Dynasty has been placed in the list of National cultural relic protection units and become a tourist attraction.
